A Voyage To Mars(Edit) →
I’m working hard at getting back into the habit of communicating with you through this site, and today I’m giving MarsEdit a workout. I’ve had the program for quite some time but only use it sporadically. Every time I think about using it I get a bit nervous that it won’t upload to my site correctly, so today I’m going to deal with that fear once and for all.

How to Make Yourself INSANELY Useful →
All of us want to be useful to others in some way. We want to feel needed, competent — like we’re making a difference, in some small way.
Some people, though, are insanely useful. They are the go-to people whenever someone needs help. They’re the people that make us feel useful because we know them — when someone needs something done, we can say “Oh, I know just the person!”
It’s not...

12 Ways to Upgrade Your Weekly Review →
Fans of GTD will already be familiar with the weekly review. Weekly reviews are designed to give you uninterrupted thinking time each week. Instead of tackling the big questions of your life between coffee breaks and morning commutes, you can set aside time to do a review.
Weekly reviews are a great concept and I’ve used them faithfully for the past few years. But I’ve found just setting aside...

10 Morning Rituals For The Healthy Entrepreneur →
Most personal development and productivity experts suggest mornings as the best time for clear and focused results-driven work. I’ve experienced the same and form my days around just a few hours of work in the morning between 10am and 1pm. I also believe that different people work best at different times, but no matter when you’re productive hours are, it’s important you set up...

Using SEO to Select a CMS →
My favorite SEO blogger, Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz in Seattle, has an excellent post titled “Choosing the Right CMS Platform for Your Website (from an SEO perspective).” It is about various aspects of SEO to consider when choosing a content management system (CMS) to build a site.
Instead of doing a comparison and contrast between different systems like Drupal and Wordpress; Rand provides 12...
Protecting Your Digital Self →
If you’re like me, your computer has become your life’s repository. Pictures, music, financial documents and much more ‘live’ on your computer’s hard drive. Hopefully you’ve taken steps to protect yourself from loss by backing up your data; either on separate hard drives that you own or on a remote server (or, better yet, both). And of course you’ve...

What Role Do Peers Play In Entrepreneurship? →
An interesting new research paper examines the role of peer influences on entrepreneurship. Since most entrepreneurs are employed in corporations before they go out on their own, the study examines how peers at those corporations effect perceptions of entrepreneurship and the likelihood of starting a business. It turns out that entrepreneurial attitudes build through feedback loops. The more...

Getting Past Done: What to Do After You’ve... →
There’s no feeling in the world quite like the mixture of triumph and sadness that comes after finishing a project you’ve been working on for months or even years. On one hand, you’re done and can finally release your finished product, whatever it is, into the world. On the other hand, though, completing a big goal leaves a little emptiness in your life, like sending your kids off to college —...

You Deleted WHAT?! →
As the years go by I’m finding more and more of the records of my life - pictures, music, email, documents, and all the other flotsam and jetsam of my existence - exist on or are accessed through my computer. And I’m confident that the same is true for you. Which leads me to a question - are you creating backups of your data? If you’re not, here’s yet another reason why...

Yesterday’s mail included a sales flyer from a local car dealership. The following message is splashed across the front in large red and yellow letters -
ATTENTION!
MATCH YOUR BONUS NUMBER TO THE ONE IN OUR SHOWROOM AND WIN
$10,000!
In smaller text, at the bottom of the flyer, was the dealership’s tagline:
NO GIMMICKS. JUST GREAT DEALS!
It might be time to consider a...
Speaking of Dr. Randy Pausch →
The latest installment of my Sixty Second Success Seminar includes a quote from Dr. Randy Pausch’s presentation Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. You will find information on how to...

Taking Another Bite From The Apple →
I finally broke down and bought an iPhone and have been spending the last few days learning to use its many features to enhance my productivity playing with it. The verdict? I wish I had bought one even sooner. I’m not even bothered by the relative speed of AT&T’s EDGE network (or lack thereof). Unlike the many who have been complaining about it, I don’t have ready...

Make your MacMini sound much better →
My best birthday present? Dave Winer gave me a little tiny adapter for my MacMini. What does it do? It plugs into the audio-out port of the Mini and converts that port into an optical out one. So, now my optical cable plugs into that adapter instead of my headphone jack. My receiver has optical ports. If you have a recent receiver your receiver probably has optical ports too.
Man, what a...

At the Guardian Media Group’s online offsite yesterday, I watched a live demonstration of the benefits of following Howard Owens’ dictum for nonwired journalists.
I keep nattering on about the need to retrain newsrooms. And I assume that this should entail at least all-day sessions with folks like me earning a few bucks for training the newsroom. That probably does still make sense (at least the...

Just So You Know →
Going in to 2008 I challenged myself to post more items on my weblog. Yet, here it is January 17th and this is my first post of the year. So what gives, you ask? I don’t want to get too “inside baseball” so suffice it to say that it took us this long to figure out - and fix - a problem that was causing anything I tried to post to show up at the bottom of the last page (instead...
