Lack of Leadership on Line One
I normally avoid political topics, but this story amazed me to such a degree that I just had to share - Senate conservatives are upset that the leaders of both parties in the chamber have in recent years increasingly used a practice known as “hotlining” bills — previously used to quickly move noncontroversial bills or simple procedural motions — to pass complex and...

The Last Lecture of Dr Randy Pausch
Forty-six-year-old Carnegie Mellon University computer science Professor Randy Pausch, dying from pancreatic cancer, gives his last lecture on September 18, 2007.  A motivational speech delivered by a real person.  Learning points from the viewpoint of public speaking: 1.  Have fun in the present moment. 2.  The power of humor.  Often, the more serious the topic, the more appropriate it is to...

How to close off a project properly
The emphasis on getting things done (GTD) through technologies, tools and psychological tweaks has helped us become able to achieve new heights in productivity. This is great since the more things that we can finish, the sooner we can get on to other (often bigger and better) things. That could mean picking up more money, vacation time or opportunities to try new things – whatever is important at...

How Observant Are You?
Actually you don’t have to be too observant to know that I’m a bit behind schedule.  If you follow me on Twitter or The Daily Doug you know tht I’ve been battling some website gremlins for the last few days.  I think we killed off the last of them yesterday evening so things should start getting back to normal. Thankfully the gremlins didn’t keep me from posting this...

DirecTV launches 21 new HD channels
Filed under: Satellite, New content The day has finally come and only a week later than we originally thought. If your setup is up to it, you can now enjoy the 21 new HD channels — four are new to just about everyone. The good news is that the HD channels are the same channel numbers as the SD equivalent, the bad news is that if you direct dial them you still have to hit the channel up...

My Desktop Size Reference Wallpaper
Occasionally I have to size browser windows quickly to see if a design will really work on smaller computer screens. In times of such need, I use this desktop background: It’s just a 1600×1200 24-bit PNG file that has the standard 4:3 ratio screen sizes on them. I suppose I should also add the widescreen aspect ratios to them too for completeness. My work is never done…sigh. The grid...

How to Data Mine Google Reader Feeds for Trends
Although I was never the A+ math student in school, I am a big fan of drawing insights from statistics - if the method is simple. If it involves math that ends in “ometry” then it’s way over my head. In addition, I am also a huge believer in studying tendencies. Humans are all creatures of habit. Identify someone or some group’s patterns and you can figure out...

Meetings Should End With Next Actions
After a few years studying the way creative teams work and developing excellent productivity and organizational solutions, Behance have a few tips regarding meetings. Meetings that end without action steps are a waste of our time. When our Action Pads contain no action steps after a meeting, we realize that the meeting should have been a voice-mail or email.
